Motion should explain something

Animation is useful when it helps users understand a change.

A transition can show where a panel came from. A loading state can confirm that an action is still processing. A small interaction can make a successful action feel clear.

Motion becomes a problem when it delays the task or competes with the content.

Ask what the movement explains.

If the answer is “nothing,” it may not belong there.

The latest Material Design guidance also places more emphasis on expressive motion systems and adaptable components, but the best implementation is still the one that supports the user’s next decision.

AI is changing the design process

AI tools can generate interface ideas, summarize research, create copy variations, and help teams explore different layouts.

That is useful during the early stages.

But AI can also produce the same predictable interface over and over:

  • A hero section with a large headline.
  • Three feature cards.
  • A dashboard full of rounded rectangles.
  • A generic chatbot button.
  • A call to action that says “Get started.”

The result may look modern while saying nothing specific about the product.

Designers still need to understand the customer, choose what deserves attention, and decide how much information the user should see at each moment.

The best use of AI in UI/UX design is not to replace judgment. It is to speed up exploration so the team has more options to evaluate.

A useful product design process usually includes:

Review the business, customers, existing product, competitors, and technical constraints.
